I wanted to create a little guidebook — something informal, almost like a furtively read field guide. I’ve been sensing in the collective consciousness — through podcast episodes, books that have gotten popular as of late, social media posts, songs released, sky transits, and direct messages from friends — that we all are craving a return. A spiral journey. A homecoming.

I’m a journalist in my day job, and an artist at my core, so I’m marrying both parts of myself in this personal project, Swimming Home.

As an ex-content creator worn down by M*ta’s algorithmic rat race, I have a gut feeling that Substack — no longer Instagram or X— is the substantive place where I can actually create community with people around shared interests.

(I’ve come to realize that Substack is far from perfect either. See: Platforming white supremacists.)

But I hope that I can use a digital space, dedicated to the thoughtfulness of long-form — which comes with a community of deep thinkers, dreamers, poets and visual artists — to create a kind of alternative, queer, decolonial mycelial magic around the concept of “homecoming.”

Swimming Home is equal parts ecological study and sensual musings. It is a silly-but-heartfelt critique of class and race. Here you will also find subversive curations of sustainability education and spiritual memes; I will show you funky little thrifts and freaky nature pics.

As a newfound bioregionalist — as a byproduct of Doing this Work! — I am determined to highlight good people doing good things for the earth and each other, especially in the DMV area.

I’m also so afraid to say this, but “feel the fear and do it anyway,” right? My 2024 goal is to host a D.C. event uniting people around climate solutions, art and collective liberation.

Shoot your shot! If you’d like to partner on an event in Washington, D.C., or would like to invite me to your upcoming event for coverage, reach out at swimminghome@substack.com.
